How To Set The DNS Server Search Order On Windows

When configuring a Windows client, it is important that you have your DNS Server Search order configured correctly. Having your DNS servers listed in the wrong order can cause unnecessary, and at times, unreasonable delays for your clients. This can also negatively impact server performance, as your servers also rely heavily on DNS. Fortunately, modifying your DNS Server Search order is not a complicated task and only takes a few moments.

In this video, David will demonstrate how easy it is to add, remove, and re-order the DNS Server Search order using the built-in graphical tools included with Windows clients and servers.

Prerequisites include: Windows 10 or Windows Server 2016 with a static IP address configured.

There are a number of ways to get to the DNS server search order settings and I'll show you a couple of them here and we need to open up your windows settings click on network and Internet. We're going to add a new DNS server that we've just commissioned? So we'll click on add type in the address is 192.168.2.61. Click on add and we want to make this our primary server. So just click the up arrow and bring that to the top of our list. At the same time, we're also going to decommission our old DNS server, which is a 52. So I'll click on that one click on remove and that's gone from our list simply click on OK. And you'll notice under the use the following DNS server addresses are search order has changed. So just need to click OK to commit an close and that's all there is to it. Thank you for watching.
